PROJECT DETAILS

The Municipality of Anchorage purchased 4,300 LED roadway fixtures as Phase One of an outdoor lighting efficiency initiative. The Anchorage conversion was the first of its kind in scope, size, and stakeholder engagement, both of the local community and the broader lighting community in the US. Crews installed luminaires over the course of 2009-2010. Project details include:

  • Expected annual savings of $340,000
  • 45-50% percent efficiency over former lighting system
  • Control system tests increased energy efficiency by an additional 30%, resulting in 80% efficiency gains over the former system
  • Zero maintenance calls for LEDs, freeing lineman to address high value deferred maintenance
  • Payback period of less than 7 years (including 4% interest)
  • LEDs expected to last between 12-15 years
  • 300% increase in color rendering
  • 16,500 tons of carbon offset annually
  • Two public surveys of resident opinions regarding system’s quality of light, light level, and sense of safety
  • Project partners included the Municipality of Anchorage, Clinton Climate Initiative, Virginia Tech, Clanton and Associates, University of Alaska Anchorage, UCDavis California Lighting Technology Center, California Energy Commission, Illumination Engineering Society
The Anchorage project data reflect LED technology from 2008-09, and current technology will provide even better efficiencies and lower project outlays.
